American Gangster an Oscar shoo-in
By Mina Hochberg | amNewYork Movie Critic
November 2, 2007
Remember the theme song to "American Gangster" because you'll probably be hearing it a lot at the Oscars next year. Ridley Scott's spellbinding epic is one of the most noteworthy movies to come out of the big studios this year. Set in the early 1970s, the film chronicles the legendary rise of real-life Harlem drugpin Frank Lucas, whose maximum-strength heroin, called Blue Magic, proliferated the streets with twice the potency at half the price.
Inspired by a New York magazine profile of Lucas in 2000, "Gangster" is not so much about drug culture as it is about the making of a fierce American entrepreneur. Lucas, who worked for years as the "driver" for a crime boss, used his go-getter initiative to travel to Vietnam in the middle of the war and personally broker a deal to import pure heroin via military transport. By cutting out the middle man, he crafted a business plan that landed him a gold mine.
Denzel Washington inhabits Lucas with the kind of uncanny ease that wins awards. Lucas is mild-mannered and unassuming -- well, except for the occasional outburst where he shoots a guy in the forehead in broad daylight or smashes another guy's head in with a piano lid at a party. He wears tasteful suits and takes his mother to church. He lives by principles -- principles that allow for maiming and killing, but principles nonetheless.

TIFF Day 1
Day 1 - Tiff 07
So the funny thing about the toronto film fest is you never know what is going to happen. After an embarrassing moment on Breakfast Television in the morning (which we'll leave at that) I headed to the screening of 'Rendition' starring Reese Witherspoon and Jake G. The film was great and on my way out I ran into Roger Ebert who although looks like he is on his way to recovery still is not 100 per cent. You've gotta love his passion for being here though.
To the intercont hotel for some biz work and the first celeb sighting was Reese herself who walked into my elevator with her perky assistant. They shared a laugh and I laughed along, boy is she tiny though. Ran into friend and Star Tv reporter Hussien while he was waiting for Jake, when I saw Jake I realized most good hollywood actors are very short.
In the lobby media huddled around waiting for interviews as Hussein and I spoke to eager students raising money outside.
After lunch with Katie it was back to screenings. I took the time to see '4 Women", "When did you last see your father' (same guy who made shopgirl) and 'They Waited' All of which passed a lot of time.
The evening was filled with South Asian glory as I sat with Mira Nair and watched the new Santosh Sivan film 'Before the rains' great flick and Deepa Mehta and Vishal Bhardwaj were both there as well. Parties for the E channel and Flow lounge closed off the night.
On to day 2.

Bourne and 300
I watched Bourne tonight and though I love the franchise I am not sure they wrapped this one up. Its another classic shot'em up flick with jaw dropping stunts and well paced action. However, when you think about the 3 films as a franchise you can't help but think this is maybe the second best one. It should open number one this week but who knows in this wacky summer market.
Don't forget to check out 300 on HDDVD - You will love it.
Peace
oh and www.filmi.org if you are in Toronto this weekend.

TIFF 2007
Looking around at the films slated for the fall I am going out on a limb and saying the following films/actors should be making an apparence in Toronto come Sept.
Tom Cruise should be here for LionsforLambs along with Robert Redford
Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe may return with American Gangster
Michael Clayton should bring out George Clooney
The Assassination of Jesse James may even bring Brad Pitt back to Toronto as well.
If you have your own ideas of who may be stopping by for the Toronto Film Fest 2007, post away.

Ya so it's been a while. Any way the summer is in full swing and just in case you are box office crazy like my friend Gitesh in the states you can stay on top of it on boxofficeguru.com
The word out of Cannes is that Moore has made another 'sick' film with lots of surprises and that Oceans 13 is the same movie as Oceans 12 just with a couple of better actors.
On a personal note I'm over at Breakfast Tv in Toronto working behind the scenes while I continue my duties at Omni and Flow.
This week I'm hoping to post a review of Knocked Up prior to the release on Friday.
Have a good one.
